TOOMSUBA — Travelers stopping at the Mississippi Welcome Center got a good taste of holiday cheer from a group of young children Thursday morning.
As a way to celebrate the holidays, the welcome center held its annual tree trimming celebration with children from the Toomsuba Head Start singing Christmas carols and hanging handmade ornaments on the tree.
Sandra Chambers, the supervisor at the welcome center, said it was the first year the center has hosted a Christmas program. She said they wanted to do something besides their usual open house to welcome visitors, so she reached out to Head Start with the offer.
“It was kind of a vision that kind of popped in my head,” said Chambers. “Let’s try it with the kids and see what happens.”
Gloria Hobson, the administrator of Toomsuba Head Start, said they have held similar programs in the past, but this was the first time they had the program at the welcome center since the reopening of the Head Start center.
Walter Marsh, who took a break from work to stop by and see his son sing, was one of several parents joining in the Christmas spirit. Even though his son was nervous during the program, Marsh said he was glad he didn’t miss the performance.
“I know the kids are the future and we have to support them and show them the true meaning of Christmas,” said Marsh.
Mary Formby, from Toomsuba, showed up to see her grandchild perform and to support the Head Start program. She’s seen similar programs for years, and has never been disappointed.
Chambers said the tree will stay up until the Christmas season ends, and she hopes to have another Christmas program next year.
