Samuel Dale Chapter, DAR

A celebration of the 90th birthday of Samuel Dale Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, was held at the chapter’s November meeting.

A birthday cake was provided by hostesses Jacque Longmeier, Dorothy Shank and Elsie Meador to commemorate the occasion.

The Meridian chapter organized in April 1928 at the Lamar Hotel and received its charter on Nov. 15, 1928, with 30 members. Ruth Gully Gowdy was the organizer and served as the chapter’s first Regent.

The club met Nov. 7, 2018, with 10 members and one guest present. Kay Wolfe, Regent of Pushmataha Chapter, DAR, presented the program, which included a history of DAR and also the history of Chief Pushmataha.

A proclamation recognizing November as American Indian Heritage Month from Meridian Mayor Percy Bland was presented. Members were presented with fun facts and DAR minutes, which included flag, Indian, women’s issues and national defense information.

The DAR sponsors two Indian Schools, Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Chemewa Indian High School in Salem, Oregon. In observance of American Indian Heritage Month, members collected $53 to send Chemewa High School as a gift.

Regent Glenda Thomas congratulated the chapter for its outreach activities, which include:

• Mailed coupons to a U.S. Air Force base in Germany in September.

• Mailed two care boxes to military personnel in Kuwait in September.

• Delivered cookies to the main Meridian fire and police stations in October in recognition of first responders.

• Collected $53 to send to the veteran’s hospital in Kosciusko.

• Mailed coupons to an army base overseas

• Mailed two care boxes to military personnel in Kuwait.

• Collected $53 to send to the Chemawa Indian School in November.

The chapter plans to mail an additional care box to military personnel in Kuwait, and to send more coupons to another military base overseas.

Kathy Anderson, director of the Meridian Activity Center, informed members about “Christmas in the City,” a Christmas bazaar held at the Meridian Activity Center. All items were handmade.

The chapter’s next meeting will be Jan. 2, 2019, at 10 a.m., at the Meridian Activity Center. Everyone is to bring a plate of finger foods to celebrate the new year.
