- Whitney Downard / The Meridian StarAn elderly woman died in her home on the 4200 block of Bailey Acres Road Thursday evening during a house fire.
A Thursday evening fire in rural Lauderdale County killed a woman and injured her son.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said the 84-year-old woman died of carbon monoxide poisoning at her Bailey Acres Circle home. Her identity hasn’t been released.
Her son sustained serious burns and sought treatment in Jackson, Cobler said.
Allan Dover, the Lauderdale County fire coordinator, said the Bailey, Northeast and Sam Dale volunteer fire departments responded around 7 p.m. to the fire.
“When we arrived, a male subject was being treated by Metro ambulance and we were told there was one more victim inside,” Dover said. “We were able to suppress the fire but were unable to save the victim.”
The fire was set intentionally and the State Fire Marshal’s Department has been called to investigate, Dover said.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said that his department will work with investigators from other agencies to collect evidence and pinpoint who set the fire.
“Our investigators are working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and developing a direction for the investigation,” Sollie said. “We’re working toward getting a clear picture of what happened.”
