Meridian Community College’s annual event, My College Cares, is doing just that: performing acts of kindness for the community by volunteering in a host of ways.

This year’s My College Cares Day is Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We assist members of our community with anything that may need to be done,” said LeAnne Motes, MCC campus life coordinator and organizer of this year’s My College Cares event.

Last year, more than 100 sites were beneficiaries of the My College Cares efforts with some 1,200 students participating.

“In the past, we have read to students, painted walls, raked leaves, polished fingernails and played bingo at nursing homes, collected trash along the roads, cleaned school buses and that’s just to name a few of the tasks we have done,” Motes said.

Classes are canceled for the first part of the day so that students, faculty and staff have the time available to volunteer. Faculty and staff serve as team captains and supervise students who volunteer for the different groups and activities.

“Many people in our community look forward to this event … they even plan their schedules around it,” Motes said.
