ON THE GO: Haunted firehouse, soul music concert highlight weekend events

If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, there are many events taking place around East Mississippi, from live music, a farmers’ market, a haunted firehouse and tour of historic homes.
From 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday, the Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Center will present “A Time To Kill,” as part of its Fall Film Series in the amphitheater. In case of rain, the movie will be shown in the multipurpose gallery. A $5 donation is suggested but members may attend free.
From 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, The Max will host Mississippi Day. Admission is $5 for adults and seniors, $1 for children 6-17 and free for kids 5 and under. On tap are free refreshments, free photo booth, door prizes, and frozen yogurt for sale.
If you’re in the Halloween spirit, Bailey Fire Department #3 will hold its annual Haunted Firehouse this weekend. Volunteers set up terrifying scenes and offer concessions. The firehouse is located on Highway 495. For more information, visit the Bailey Haunted House page on Facebook.
Blues and soul music fans won’t want to miss “A Night of Soul,” Saturday at the Temple Theatre located at the corner of 8th Street and 24th Avenue.
A great line-up will be performing including Billy Ray Cole & Sons, Krista McKenzie and special guests Patricia Allen and Robert Evans. The show will begin at 8 p.m. and doors will open at 7 p.m. Plenty of concessions will be available. Tickets are on sale at Sam’s Fashions and the Temple Theatre Box Office Friday from 10 a.m. – noon and from 2 – 4 p.m. VIP admission is $30 and general admission is $15.
Also on Saturday is Earth’s Bounty at Singing Brakeman Park from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. where fresh produce and homemade jams, jellies and other delights are available for purchase. The kids will enjoy taking mini horse cart rides brought in by Coyote Hills Equine Rescue and Therapeutic Riding located in Chunky. The group will be located under the trees at the park. There’s no charge for the rides, but donations are greatly appreciated.
Meridian Art Walk will be taking place in conjunction with Earth’s Bounty at Union Station offering the opportunity to explore and purchase unique art. Various creative mediums will be on display.
Also on Saturday, Northeast High School Trojan Band has teamed up with IHOP fora fundraiser at the restaurant on South Frontage Road. The benefit will help raise money for band equipment. If you eat at IHOP, just let a server know to write, “Northeast Fundraiser,” on your ticket and the band will receive a portion of that purchase. Band boosters Kelli and Josh Fitzgerald are also seeking businesses to donate funds for new instruments. You may call them at 601-632-5691.
In Chunky, the Lazy Acres Pumpkin Patch is going on now through the end of the month. Children will have a ball going down the 100-foot slide, roaming through the four-acre corn maze and playing on the giant jumping pillow. Pumpkins may be purchased for $3 to $6, depending on size. The farm is located at 596 Lazy Acres Road.
If a short road trip is what you’re looking for, the Historic Tour of Homes will be going on this weekend in Eutaw, Alabama. The tour, sponsored by the Green County Historic Society, is from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday For more information call 205-292-0015 or 205-799-7380.
Back in Meridian, The 37th Annual October Fest will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 1914 18th Avenue. A yard sale will be held at 7 a.m. and the festival will begin at 10:15 a.m.
