Thanks to a landmark Supreme Court decision, sports betting is coming to Mississippi, and the Pearl River Resort will soon offer it to its guests.

Sportsbook at Timeout Lounge will be located at the Golden Moon Hotel and Casino beginning next Thursday, Aug. 30. Sports betting will also open at the Pearl River Resort’s sister property, Bok Homa Casino, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1.

Neal Atkinson, the director of table games, poker sportsbook and bingo operations, said the addition of sports gambling, made legal by a Supreme Court decision in May for people ages 21 and older in all states, is a massive deal for everyone at the resort and its potential guests.

A recent employee meeting to discuss the addition of sports betting was the highest-attended employee event in a long time, Atkinson said.

“Everyone is super excited about it,” Atkinson said. “Everyone’s asking questions, and everyone is ready for it to open next Thursday. There’s so much excitement and engagement, and everyone on the property is anticipating the opening.”

The resort will begin implementation with traditional in-person wagering with a wagering person at the desk. Forms will be available to anyone wanting to bet on a game, and a manual ticket can be cashed in for a winning wager. This will be the format for the first 30 to 60 days, but Atkinson said there are also plans for electronic wagering in the future.

“We anticipate adding account-based mobile wagering on the premises — and I have to stress the ‘on the premises’ part,” Atkinson said. “You will have to be there for it to work. That way, people will be able to place money on a wagering account with their phone or tablet anywhere on casino property.”

The addition of sports betting will see an increase of approximately 12 to 15 employees at the resort, Atkinson said. He also expects to see an increase in visitors thanks to sports betting.

“We’re hoping to see new people that haven’t been to our resort property before,” Atkinson said. “We want them to experience sports betting but also be exposed to our other offerings like table games and slots, our spa, water park, golf and other amenities.”

The Timeout Lounge was recently remodeled into a full-service sportsbook, which includes traditional wager boards and 20 large-screen TVs for viewing sporting events. It also features a full 12-TV board with odds being displayed.

“It takes up basically the whole wall and is quite impressive,” Atkinson said, adding that there will be a full bar with adult beverages and charging stations for their phones.

Regulations allow betting at the resort on all professional and amateur sports contests sanctioned by the NCAA, but not every college event will have a line set to it.

“If the traders establish a line for that event, we’ll have it,” Atkinson said. “With lower division teams, there’s probably not enough information to establish a legitimate line.”
