- Dave Bohrer / The Meridian StarAndrew Chapel United Methodist Church is located at 9203 Hillview Drive in Lauderdale County.
Andrew Chapel began when Tobias Gibson, circuit rider for the area held a revival in 1841. The church was later named for a traveling preacher who preached the first sermon in the new church building constructed around that time.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s the church began to grow. Rev. Barry Skelton served as pastor for 15 years during this time as people began moving into the area. The size of the sanctuary was doubled in 1998 and a family life center was built. The church recently paid off a new fellowship area built in 2011.
Rev. Lannis May is in his third week as the new pastor appointed to serve Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church.
Rev. Gib Prince, a retired United Methodist pastor, who served Andrew Chapel for six years continues to help with teaching and encouragement.
Andrew Chapel has 250 members. Sunday morning worship begins at 9:45 a.m., followed by a fellowship time and Sunday School classes for all ages at 11:15 a.m. On Wednesday night there is a fellowship meal at 6 p.m. followed by adult bible study, children and youth activities and choir practice.
Located at 9203 Hillview Drive, a few miles from the Naval Air Station, the church has a strong connection with the military.
The church recently celebrated Independence Day with a yearly barbecue following Sunday morning service. The church is preparing for Vacation Bible School July 23-27, scheduled from 5:30 until 7:45 each night. The youth take trips to various places throughout the year.
