Miles Miller can breathe a sigh of relief.
Miller announced his commitment to Ole Miss’ basketball program in a July 5 tweet, ending speculation about the former Meridian standout’s immediate basketball future.
Miller, a 2018 Premier Preps of East Mississippi basketball selection, originally signed with the United States Naval Academy in May, but his plans to enroll in the service academy this summer have been postponed as he continues to recover from a gunshot wound to his right leg.
“It’s definitely a relief,” Miller said. “There was a lot that happened in a short period of time, and my plans changed. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m just glad the process is over and I’m ready to get on campus.”
Miller visited Oxford in early July to meet with coaches and attend a team practice, and said he enjoyed the atmosphere. He’ll attend Ole Miss on an academic scholarship.
“The opportunity arose — we set up a visit,” Miller said. “I watched them practice and got to talk to all of the coaches, and I felt it was a comfortable fit for me and what I needed, so I decided that it was a good place to be.”
Miller will report to Oxford Aug. 14 to join the team as a preferred walk-on. As a preferred walk-on, he’ll practice, dress and travel with the basketball team, but he won’t play in any games. Miller’s redshirt status this season also leaves him with four years of eligibility.
“I’ll actually be a redshirt, so I’ll just be practicing and getting my body back stronger, getting back healthy and things like that,” Miller said.
After a prolonged absence from the basketball court due to his injury, Miller said the opportunity to be on the court again is what he’s most looking forward to this fall.
“Just the chance to play with some great players,” Miller explained. “I had the chance to talk to a couple of them, and they seemed like great guys. I’m just ready to get back to being around a team.”
Miller is still undergoing physical therapy for his lower leg injury and said he’s pleased with the process he’s made during the rehabilitation process.
“It’s definitely getting better every day,” Miller said. “I’m satisfied with the improvements that I’ve made, and I’m just ready to reach 100 percent.”
According to the Miller family, the Naval Academy still remains an option. But that could change should Ole Miss offer Miller a full scholarship following the season.
“Right now, I’m just taking it one step at a time and seeing how everything goes,” Miller said.
Miller averaged 17 points per game and four assists per game as a senior last season and was a member of Meridian’s 2017 MHSAA Class 6A state championship team.
