Several local events planned for Memorial Day

- Meridian Star file photoFallen armed service members are remembered at the Lauderdale County Courthouse on Memorial Day 2017. This year's service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday at the front of the courthouse. It will move inside in the event of rain.
Several local events are planned to honor the fallen on Memorial Day weekend.
Opening the holiday weekend on Saturday, the Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience presents Cumberland Run in concert. The show is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. at the Max in the Citizens National Bank Courtyard, rain or shine. The concert is free with admission or a museum membership.
On Monday, a service is planned at the Lauderdale County Courthouse to commemorate those who lost their lives in service of the United States. The name of each fallen soldier from Lauderdale County will be read followed by words from guest speaker Terry Pankhurst, LCDR (Ret.) There will also be a 21-gun salute by the Meridian Police Department Rifle Team.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on the courthouse lawn. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the Circuit Court chambers inside the courthouse.
Other memorial day events on Monday include:
• 10 a.m. – Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton, 248 Honor Circle, will have its annual Memorial Day Ceremony with guest speaker Henry Gruno, director Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Rain or shine, the event will take place with an expected flyover, along with bagpipers.
• 10 a.m. – WoodmenLife Chapter 332 of Union invites the public to its Memorial Day service at the Union Mini Park flagpole.
• 11 a.m. – Memorial Day Program at Deweese Park in Philadelphia.
