Worship Site Profile: Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church

Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church was established in 1857 by a constituent of five people that migrated from Georgia to Newton County, Mississippi. There are still many descendants of the original members who live in Newton County and are presently active in the church.
After the organization of the church, the church quickly began to grow and attract large crowds. There have been three churches on the property where the present church stands. The first church was torn down because it could not accommodate the size of the congregation. The second church burned in November of 1931, due to a fire that was built to warm the church for Sunday services. The third and present church was dedicated in May 1932, after its completion.
In 1975, an addition of Sunday School rooms was completed. In January 2009 there was a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Family Life Building, which was completed and dedicated a few months later.
