Last-minute candidate Stephen Wilson joined the race before the filing deadline Friday, bringing the total candidates for November’s general election races to nine.
Four candidates are unopposed in the race to be elected as the next county court judge, chancery court judge or circuit court judge.
Judges’ races are nonpartisan.
Current county court judges Veldore “Vel” Young Graham and Lisa Howell are unopposed. Howell was appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant when former Judge Frank Coleman retired last year and is running for her first election.
In Chancery Court, current Judge Larry Primeaux is running unopposed, while Charles E. “Charlie” Smith and Frances Smith Stephenson run for Judge Jerry Mason’s seat. Mason plans to retire this year.
Also retiring is 10th Circuit Court Judge Lester Williamson, with Robert T. “BO” Bailey, Wilson and Robert Compton both running for his seat.
Charles W. Wright, appointed following the death of Judge Justin Cobb, is running unopposed for his first election.
