Roundups: Luckett, Philly beat East Webster

Nia Luckett pitched a gem, and Philadelphia’s offense did just enough to secure a 3-2 win against East Webster in Game 1 of the second round of the MHSAA Class 2A playoffs Tuesday.

Luckett pitched seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits with six strikeouts for the Lady Tornadoes (15-4), who are coming off a first-round bye.

Marsha Hunt, Kamryn Moore and Shania Moore all had RBIs for Philadelphia.

Shelby Anderson tossed seven innings of three-run ball and the Lady Cougars tallied 10 hits in Game 1 of the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Anderson surrendered just two hits and struck out eight for Newton County (21-7-1) while going 2-for-4 offensively. Brittany Thomas finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Katelyn Gibson went 2-for-4 as well. Landree Amis had a triple and three RBIs.

CHOCTAW CENTRAL 5, WESSON 0 

The Lady Warriors (13-9) held Wesson to just three hits in Game 1 of the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Darien Tubby finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, and C. Kenaye Willis had a double.

Iris Farve got the win for Choctaw Central, tossing seven shutout innings on just 80 total pitches.

MAIS Baseball

NCA 5, RIVER OAKS 0 

Braxton Rose had a three-run double to help Newton County Academy (11-14) grab a 5-0 win in Game 1 of the first round of the MAIS Class AA baseball playoffs Tuesday.

Kemp Alderman went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and Logan Little and Alec Thompson had one RBI apiece for the Generals. Little and Zach Joyner both doubled.

Rose and Alderman combined to pitch seven shutout innings, with Rose getting all but the final out. Rose finished with 16 strikeouts and surrendered just one hit while walking three. Alderman had one strikeout against his only batter faced with two outs in the seventh inning.

DESOTO 10, KEMPER ACADEMY 0 

Landon Stapleton finished 2-for-2, but only one other Rams batter managed a hit as DeSoto shut out Kemper Academy in Game 1 of the first round of the MAIS Class A postseason.

Dylan Dawson had KA’s only other hit, a double.

Chase Cawthorne, Logan Christopher and Stapleton combined to pitch seven innings for the Rams, giving up 10 runs, four earned, on seven hits and there walks. They struck out four, and KA’s defense committed three errors behind them.
