The victim in Sunday’s early morning shooting has been identified as Meridian High School basketball standout Miles Miller.
Miller’s father, Sherrod Miller, said via text message Sunday afternoon his son “Just got out of surgery and he’s in the room and doing fine.”
Miles Miller earlier this month officially committed to the United States Naval Academy.
Meridian basketball coach Ron Norman learned of the shooting early Sunday morning. Norman visited the Miller family in the hospital on Sunday.
“I saw him yesterday,” Norman said. “Actually, when I left, they were taking him back to surgery. He got out in about three hours. He was in good spirits last night — I talked to him about 9 (p.m.) — getting some rest. And then today, we thought he was going to get to come home, but the doctor wanted to keep him another day to ensure everything with the leg and surgery went well, and that his body took well to the rod that was put in his leg.”
Miles Miller remained in the hospital Monday and according to Sherrod Miller, is expected to be released Tuesday. Sherrod Miller also said via text message Monday, “It’s been unbelievable the amount of support and prayers for him from everyone.”
Meridian police officers responded to the shooting that occurred at a Meridian Waffle House early Sunday morning.
One person was shot in the leg in the parking lot of the Waffle House on Highway 19 N. around 12:45 a.m. according to MPD Sgt. Dareall Thompson.
He was taken to a local hospital by personal vehicle before officers arrived on scene, Thompson said.
Shortly after the shooting a vehicle believed to be involved was stopped by Meridian police. Four people were detained for questioning and released.
Thompson said some evidence was collected at the crime scene and the results have been sent to the State Crime Lab in Jackson.
