College baseball: Southern Miss wins, Alabama falls in midweek contests

Former Southeast Lauderdale standout Mason Irby went 1-for-3 with a walk, and former West Lauderdale outfielder was 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored for Southern Miss as the Golden Eagles edged Louisiana-Lafayette 9-8 Tuesday.

Matt Wallner went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, Bryant Bowen finished 2-for-4 with two RBIS and Luke Reynolds hit a two-run home run.

J.C. Keys got the start for Southern Miss, giving up three runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. Mason Strickland, Alex Nelms, Sean Tweedy and Trent Driver combined for 4 2/3 innings of relief, combining to give up five runs, four earned, on nine hits with seven strikeouts.

Sam Gardner suffered the loss, giving up four runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work as Alabama fell to Jacksonville State Tuesday.

Mason Duke, Tyler Adams and Dylan Duarte combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings for Alabama.

Keith Holcombe went 1-for-1 with a walk for Alabama, and Cobie Vance finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
