The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations confirmed that it would be investigating the death of a man in the custody of police officers Monday but didn’t release more details Tuesday.
Sgt. Dareall Thompson, with the Meridian Police Department, confirmed that the chase of the suspect began within city limits, but referred further questions to the MBI.
The incident, on North Lakeland Road, occurred in the Lauderdale County Sheriff Department’s jurisdiction and involved a Meridian Police Officer and a conservation officer with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks.
Ward Calhoun, the chief deputy of the sheriff’s department, said officers noticed the man was in distress after arresting him and placing him in the back of a patrol car.
Calhoun said that Metro Ambulance transported the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Calhoun, also, deferred other questions to MBI.
