Lauderdale County deputies arrested Travis Crider, of the Dogwood Lake area, for attacking two cars with an ax Wednesday night.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department received a call just after 9 p.m. about a man who had attacked the victim’s vehicle with an ax at the intersection of Dogwood Lake Road and Cook Road, according to Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun.

The victim told deputies they were stopped at the four-way stop when a man ran from the woods with an ax. He swung and damaged the passenger door of the vehicle. The victim then called 911, Calhoun said.

Before a deputy could arrive, the man allegedly attacked a second car at the four-way stop and the ax got stuck in the driver’s side rear floor panel, Calhoun said.

A deputy arrived shortly after and found Crider, who matched the victims’ description of the attacker, Calhoun said. Crider had a steel post but dropped the post when he saw the deputy. Calhoun said Crider apologized to the deputy, saying he thought that the deputy was someone else.

Crider, 28, has been charged with simple assault and possession of marijuana, but that other charges may be possible once the victims’ receive estimates for the damages, Calhoun said.

Both charges are misdemeanors but, depending on the vehicle damage Crider could be charged with a felony. His bond is set at $1,000.
