Paramedics were called to an unresponsive inmate at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility Thursday morning, pronouncing 53-year-old Anthony Bolton dead at the scene.
The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department will investigate his death and has sent his body for an autopsy at the State Crime Lab in Pearl, according to Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun.
Calhoun reported no signs of trauma, adding “at this point, there is no indication of a physical assault.”
Bolton was sentenced to life for the murder of William Tucker in Harrison County in 1983, following an armed robbery at Tucker’s store in which Bolton shot Tucker and his daughter, Tina Fulmer, according to a lawsuit Bolton filed concerning his “unlawful arrest.” The Mississippi Supreme Court upheld his conviction in 1988.
Bolton attempted to escape later that year from a Forrest County facility and was also sentenced to an additional five years. Bolton also faced a aggravated assault charge from Simpson County and was sentenced to 20 years.
