From the Shepherd’s Heart: God’s immeasurable care for us

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7
This week with cold temperatures, my bird feeder has been bombarded by birds. There were so many, it looked like an ant hill had been kicked. Birds were running back and forth as others touched down for an early morning breakfast.
There were two cardinals guarding the feeder itself. But, under the feeder, doves and finches navigated the busy patio to look for the seeds falling from the feeder above. There were so many birds, I decided to count how many fit under one feeder. With all the movement, it was difficult to assess the number. My estimate was probably thirty-four birds.
Most of these birds were migratory. They had traveled great distances from colder regions that were too extreme for survival. It is as if God was directing them, so they would be able to withstand the extremes of this season.
Jesus said regarding sparrows, “Not one of them is forgotten before God.” Does it not make you wonder how God can focus on each bird? Not even one of them is forgotten. His loving care is blessed on each because they are valuable in His sight.
So, the question for the day is, “Does God value us enough to care for us?” Like the little birds, we could worry from where would our next meal come. Like the little birds, we could worry about being lost in the crowd. Like the little birds, we could consider ourselves too insignificant for focus. Like the little birds, we could question our worth.
But, God’s proof of His concern for us is closer than we might think. The proof God cares is found in His divine knowledge of how many hairs are on our heads. For a few, it doesn’t take long for God to show His care by counting our hair follicles. For others, it seems almost impossible.
It is estimated that the average human has between 90,000-150,000 hair follicles on his/her head. That is so many, we would lose count before we knew as much about ourselves as God knows. God is interested about details in our lives that we cannot even fathom. The focus of God’s care exceeds our comprehension.
If sparrows are important to God, and the number of hairs on our heads is important to God, we should never doubt His concern for our daily needs. Not until we are complete in knowing how many hairs we have, will we be as concerned for ourselves as much as God cares for us.
The next time you finish grooming your hair, celebrate God knows more about you than you do yourself. In God’s eyes, you are significant!
