From the Shepherd’s Heart: Keep focus of search on Savior

“When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.” Matthew 2:3

Isn’t it amazing how announcements can bring peace to some and trouble to others! Men from the East had come celebrating the birth of the “King of the Jews.” This term was a known term for the long-awaited Messiah. Jews thought the Messiah would restore their kingdom with peace and prosperity. All of Judaism studied the scriptures and worshipped with expectancy of this magnificent event.

Now, men from the East have come with great enthusiasm and announced that the birth had occurred. A King was born! No more waiting was needed. One would have thought that a great celebration would have occurred; parading in the streets, ceasing of work, and festivities to fit the occasion.

However, the response was a troubling spirit. King Herod led the way becoming troubled at a potential successor. All of Jerusalem joined Herod in the concern. Their searching of scripture verified this event would occur in Bethlehem. All the city was astir with the consequences of this news.

Why would such news cause trouble? Several reasons may be suggested.

The news may have interrupted their agenda. It is common that we have plans that leave God out. We can set our goals without any reference to God’s plan or approval. When God is consulted, it usually is after plans are complete. We simply want the Lord to put a stamp of approval on what we planned to do anyway. This outlook comes from those who think they are in charge of their lives. They see no need for God to interject his calendar of events.

The news may have threatened their kingdom. King Herod was not really a Jewish king. Herod was a descendant of Esau from the land of Idumea. Herod was really an appointed puppet of Rome. The people didn’t care for him and considered him a symbol of the oppression they wished to remove. Herod was not concerned if scripture was being fulfilled. He was more concerned about his fame and prosperity. People like Herod find new agendas threaten their rule over life.

The news may have prompted a discussion about unknown consequences. Much trouble is bought when we try to guess the future. We pompously plan as if we can control destiny, but we cannot guarantee our next breath. When we realize we are not in control, we cower from every noise and shadow.

But wise men found joy! How? They searched the scriptures until they knew God’s agenda. Wise men adjust their lives by staying focused on the Savior. They came to focus on the baby, not themselves. When they found the baby, they worshipped Him. Instead of fearing consequences, they just kept looking until they found Jesus.

May the news of Jesus coming into your world be what you have been looking for!
