“Everybody has been apprehended at this point in time,” Lauderdale County Sheriff Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said around 5:45 p.m., almost four hours after the chase began.

According to the sheriff’s department those arrested and their charges are:

  • Samuel M Robinson, 18, of Decatur, charged with two counts aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer and felony fleeing and eluding. Total bond – $300,000 /$100,000 on each count
  • Jalon T Shephard, 16, of Newton, charged with two counts aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer. Total bond $200,000 / $100,000 on each count
  • Jonathan Devell Jones, 16, of Newton, charged with two counts aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Total bond – $200,000 /$100,000 on each count
  • Nike Jamall Talley, 17, of Newton, two counts aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Total bond – $200,000 /$100,000 on each count

While some are juveniles, they will all be charged as adults, Calhoun said.

The incident started about 2 p.m., on Old Highway 80, when the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to stop and sped away, leading to a high-speed chase for three to four miles, Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said.

The car then stopped on the campus of East Mississippi State Hospital and at least two of the suspects were taken into custody by 2:25. It was unclear if the car purposely stopped or crashed, Sollie said.

Another suspect ran away, but was found about 4:15 p.m. near West Gate Hills Drive, Calhoun said. Weapons were found on the three suspects in custody.

Soon after, Calhoun said the department received a tip as to the whereabouts of the fourth suspect, who was apprehended in Newton County. It is believed he is the suspect who “bailed out” of the vehicle when it crossed 5th Street, Calhoun said.

At the time of this report, Sollie did not believe the deputy returned fire, but at least two of the suspects allegedly fired at the squad car.

If the deputy returned fire the incident will be investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. Otherwise, the sheriff’s department will handle the investigation.

Dozens of bystanders were gathered Monday afternoon at a nearby gas station on State Boulevard and 45th Avenue near East Mississippi State Hospital. One witness said she saw deputies pursue two black men running into a nearby neighborhood at about 2:15 p.m.

More than 20 officers from area law enforcement agencies responded, flooding the area with patrol cars. Some officers gathered in the street with weapons to plan their pursuit.

A perimeter was set up around the state hospital and in the surrounding neighborhood near Highland Park.

Despite the perimeter, residents living around State Boulevard, 44th Avenue and Royal Road moved freely, following police from stop to stop throughout the streets.

Canine officers were released around 3:25 p.m. to track the suspects. The search moved to a wooded area near Mosby Road around 4 p.m.

One of the people in the car had felony indictments against him, Sollie said.

Meridian Community College was placed on lockdown.

Meridian Police, Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department, East Mississippi State Hospital campus, Meridian Community College campus police and Mississippi Highway Patrol are responding.
