The Lady Warriors of East Central Community College closed out the East Central Classic with a victory over the Lawson State Lady Cougars 84-53 Tuesday afternoon.

ECCC continued its red-hot start to the season by dominating from the opening tip to the final buzzer and improving their season record to 6-0.

The Lady Warriors raced out to a 6-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter and would never relinquish the lead in the contest. A mix of clutch shooting by freshman Diamond Wraggs and pristine passing by sophomore Autumn Taylor helped push the Lady Warriors’ lead to 20-15 at the end of the first period.

A mix of tough defense and timely shooting helped ECCC dominate the second quarter. Wraggs again had the hot hand as she hit several shots while also dominating on the boards. The Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Cougars 22-7 in the second to push the halftime lead to 42-22.

In the third quarter, ECCC put the game completely out of reach. The Lady Warriors’ suffocating defense forced the Lady Cougars into multiple turnovers, which they were able to turn into points. The score was 66-35 at the end of the third.

The Lady Warriors were able to give many of the starters a rest during the fourth quarter of action, while the backups got some valuable minutes. Even with many of the starters out, the Lady Warriors continued to play at a fast pace and light up the scoreboard.

“Our kids played extremely hard for the entire game,” ECCC coach Robert Thompson said. “We got great contributions from everybody that played, and it was a great win to take into Thanksgiving break.”

ECCC had 4 players score in double figures. Freshman Diamond Wraggs led all scorers with 19 points while also collecting 9 rebounds. Sharan Turner added 14 points, while Tamirra Haskin and Tan Lloyd added 13 and 10, respectively. Freshman Autumn Taylor contributed to many of these scoring opportunities with 10 assists. Sophomore Sakina Wynn led Lawson State in scoring with nine points.

The Lady Warriors will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, as it hosts Southwest Mississippi Community College.
