• The Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library will be closed on Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov.11, for Veterans Day. Also, the library will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 23, 24, 25, for Thanksgiving holidays.

• The Meridian Civitan Club is selling its old-fashioned world-famous Claxton fruitcakes. The fruitcakes remain priced at $4 per pound and are available for purchase at Meridian Mutual Federal Credit Union, 1st Mississippi Federal Credit Union, MUNA Federal Credit Union, Citizens National Bank, Great Southern Bank, First State Bank and Bankplus.

• 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. – MOPS Fall Yard Sale at Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church – bi-annual yard sale benefiting a local Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group. Shop or Sell! 1 parking spot for $15 or 2 for $25. Concessions will be available.

• 11 a.m. – Meridian Naval Air Station Commanding Officer Capt. Brian S. Horstman will be the keynote speaker when Meridian Community College will pay tribute to veterans with a special ceremony in the Graham Gymnasium on the campus. The public is invited to attend. In addition to the keynote speaker’s talk, Dan McFadden of CertainTeed Corp will present the occasion speech.

Thursday, Nov. 9

7 a.m. – East Central Community College will honor military veterans by hosting its Military Appreciation Breakfast on the Decatur campus. The event begins with a complimentary breakfast at 7 a.m. in the Gold Room of Mabry Cafeteria. The keynote address for the breakfast will be given by Maj. Gen. Janson D. 4:30 p.m. – K-6th Grade Veteran’s Day Activity at the Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library.

Saturday, Nov. 11

• 7 a.m. – 17th annual Run for Hope will be at Bonita Lakes and includes a 10K Trail Run, a 5K Road Race, a 2 Mile Walk, and a 1 Mile Fun Run. Register in person at Anderson Health and Fitness Center. Online registration is available at www.southernracetimeing.com. All proceeds benefit Hope Village for Children. • 9 a.m.-noon – Parents for Public Schools and the MS Parent Training and Information Center will offer a Parent Advocacy Academy for parents of children will special needs at Union Station. Participants can register for this free training by calling Leslie Junkin at 662-251-5599. This is an opportunity to learn about the special education process and students’ and parents’ rights under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act.

• 9 a.m.-noon – New Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church will hold its 1st Men’s Conference with the theme being “The Empowerment of Man.” There will be several dynamic speakers that will speak on topics that are designed to help empower men spiritually, physically and mentally. • 4-6 p.m. – East Central Community College is holding an open house for its new Forest Career Advancement Center located at 316 South Main Street in Forest. Tours of the facility will be available and refreshments will be served.

• 5:30 p.m. – The East Mississippi Foothills Land Trust will have its 2017 annual membership meeting at the Mississippi Power Service Center Building, 3118 Hwy. 45N in Meridian.
