Bloomquist wins Whynot Super Late Model event

Tennessee’s Scott Bloomquist walked away the winner Saturday night of the 100-lap Super Late Model dirt track race that headlined the 23rd Fall Classic at the Whynot Motorsportspark.

A big crowd of racing fans braved the chilly temperatures to witness Whynot’s biggest race of the year. The Classic paid $15,000 to win and drew some of the top drivers from around the country. More than 45 drivers sought one of the 24 positions to start the race.

Bloomquist of Mooresville, Tenn., was challenged toward the end of the race by Brandon Ovaton of Evans, Ga., who came in second. Dennis Erb finished third.

Mississippi’s David Breazeale, the defending champion, came in sixth this year.

Other divisions

The Super Late Models were just part of the show. Overall, more than 200 cars competed throughout the night. The top three finishers in the other divisions were as follows:

– Crate Late Model: (paid $2,500 to win) Colton Leyendecker came in first, followed by Buddy George in second and Tony Shelton in third.

– Open Wheel Modified: (paid $2,000 to win) Randy King placed first followed by Spencer Hughes in second and Timothy Culp in third.

– Street Stock: (paid $2,000 to win) Hughes repeated as champion in the Street Stock division. Dewayne Estes came in second and Stacy Robinson placed third.

– Nesmith Factory Stocks (paid $1,000 to win) Jim McDuffie placed first, followed by Jamey Boland in second and Cliff Williams in third.

– 602 Late Model (paid $1,000 to win) James Ware came in first followed by Blake McNeil in second and Daniel Moore in third.

The cars were scheduled to run their qualifying laps on Friday. Most of the heat races were finished before the rain came in. Those that were left ran before Saturday’s events started.
