HATTIESBURG — Homecoming week remains a special annual event on the Southern Miss campus.
That time returned again this week and culminates when the Golden Eagles entertain Conference USA foe UTEP in a 6 p.m., contest Saturday at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The game can be seen live locally on THIS TV (channel 219 on Comcast) as well as online at WatchStadium.com and on twitter (@WatchStadium). In addition, the game can
be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network along with TuneIn via the internet.
The Golden Eagles (3-2 overall, 1-1 C-USA) return home after rallying on the road to defeat UTSA 31-29 in their first ever win at the Alamodome.
The victory came courtesy of Ito Smith’s 178 rushing yards, which included a school-record 89-yard touchdown run. Southern Miss scored 28 second-half points as sophomore quarterback Keon Howard threw for 212 yards on 15-of-20 passing and three touchdowns against the Roadrunners. It marked Howard’s first passing multi-TD game. Curtis Mikell added a big 61-yard interception return which started the Golden Eagle rally and Cornell Armstong helped deflect a two-point conversion pass in the game’s final minute to help preserve the win.
This week, Southern Miss looks to win its third-straight homecoming contest as they have posted a 58-22 overall mark when they have welcomed back their alumni.
Southern Miss leads the series with the Miners 5-4 and have won the last two meetings between the two schools which encompasses a 34-7 Golden Eagle victory last season at the Sun Bowl in El Paso.
