United Blood Services asks for donations later in week

Following the Las Vegas shooting that killed 59 people and injured more than 500 people, hundreds lined up at United Blood Services donor centers in Las Vegas to donate blood, according to a UBS press release.
The current need has been met, however, after UBS sent more than 200 unites of blood and blood components for transfusions Tuesday.
“While we are in awe of the incredible outpouring of support, it’s important to note that in any situation where blood transfusions are needed, it’s the blood already on the shelf that saves lives,” Danny Garrick, the division president for UBS, said. “To effectively manage the blood supply for patients either here locally or in Nevada, we are asking donors to make appointments to give blood throughout the coming weeks and even months.”
Blood donations have a limited shelf life – only 42 days for red blood cells and just five days for platelets. To serve the ongoing need as victims heal, UBS asks donors to schedule blood donation appointments later in the week, according to the release.
To schedule a donation appointment, call 1 (877) UBS-HERO or visit unitedbloodservices.org. UBS warns that due to an overwhelming response, donors may experience long wait times.
