NEWTON — T.J. Wash ran for two touchdowns and threw for two, leading Scott Central to a 35-12 victory over Newton in a battle of unbeaten 2A powers Friday evening at Morgan Field.
Wash scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and a 32-yard run and connected with Curtis Jones on scoring passes of 37 and 52 yards.
Scott County is 7-0 and Newton 5-1. They are the to two teams in 2A, according to the MaxPreps website.
Rebel coach Jimbo Nowell gave credit to his defense that held Newton to its lowest scoring total of the season: “I’m so proud of our defense. They played their hearts out.
They (Newton) have some great athletes. Their quarterback (Trivion Hillie) gave us fits chasing him around all night.”
The Rebels converted two first quarter turnovers into a 9-0 lead. A fumble recovery at the 1 put Wash in position for his first TD.
An interception by Ken Patrick resulted in a 38-yard field goal by Manuel Hernandez.
A couple of officiating decisions in the second quarter went Scott Central’s way, enabling the Rebels to take a 15-6 halftime lead.
With Scott Central leading 9-6, Newton’s Zackariah Johnson picked up a fumble and ran 25 yards to the end zone. But after a conference by the officials, Ken Butler was ruled down before the fumble, giving the ball back to the Rebels.
The Rebels were called for an ineligible receiver when Hernandez hooked up with Ken Patrick on a 31-yard pass out of punt formation to the Newton 40. But after another conference by the officials, the flag was picked up. That set up Wash’s 32-yard TD run on which he broke two tackles and managed to stay in bounds.
“Man I was close (to the sideline)” Wash said. “I was tiptoeing to keep in bounds.”
The Rebels broke the game open with three second half TDs — the two Wash to Jones passes and a 30-yard punt return by Patrick.
Newton was never able to get its running game going against the Scott Central defense. The two Tiger touchdowns came on passes — 15-yards from Zachary Johnson to Javarious Moore in the second quarter and 45 yards from Hollie to Zachariah Johnson in the fourth quarter.
