Any current nursing instructor can apply to be item writers for the NCLEX-RN exam, Beddingfield said, adding that two are chosen from each region and two from Canada for a total of 10 writers on the panel.

“I have participated in an Item Writing Panel once before in 2010,” said Beddingfield. Participating on a panel given an instructor more insight in the development of the exam, she added.

The NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN examinations identify those candidates who demonstrate minimal competence to practice nursing at the entry level. Passing the NCLEX exam is one of the requirements necessary for attaining a nursing license/registration in the US and participating Canadian provinces and territories.
