Auditions for Meridian Community College’s Arts & Letters Series production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” will be Monday at 6 p.m. in the McCain Theater on the MCC campus.
Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.

“We are auditioning for leads and choral parts,” said Dr. Todd Brand, director of the Arts & Letters Series and chairman of the fine arts division at MCC. “Participants will need to arrive prepared to sing 16 bars of a musical theater piece.
The show will run Nov. 16-19. Brand noted there are no children’s parts in this show.
The story begins as the bells of Notre Dame ring throughout Paris, Quasimodo watches as Parisians revel in the Feast of Fools. He’s held captive by his caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, but he escapes for the day and joins the crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit; Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enamored. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies. It’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.
The score and story make “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” production an unforgettable musical.
