Ogletree starred at Union High School before accepting a golf scholarship at Georgia Tech, where he is a rising sophomore.

“It went really well from the start,” Ogletree said of Monday’s round. “I birdied the first hole, birdied the seventh hole and bogeyed eight and bounced back with a birdie on nine. So I turned at two under — that’s the tough side, I feel. And then I birdied 11 and just kind of coasted in. So I played really solid — I bogeyed 12 and birdied 16.”

Ogletree arrived in California a few days ago to prepare for the tournament.

“We’ve been here for a few days — I played a practice round two days ago, and played Bel-Air (Sunday),” Ogletree said.

Play continues today, when Ogletree will attempt to make the cut of 64 who advance to match play.

“It’s one shot at a time, and don’t really think about the cut; just play each shot as good as I can,” he said. “That’s all I can really do.”
