Shockey, Valentine headline wildlife extravaganza in Jackson

Jim Shockey and Brenda Valentine will be the featured speakers at the annual Mississippi Wildlife Federation’s Wildlife Extravaganza Friday, Saturday and Sunday Aug. 4-6 at the Trademart Center on the Jackson Fairgrounds.
Friday is kids day at the show and children 12 and under enter free. There will be bb gun shooting, catfish hand grabbing, youth archery and casting areas for the kids. The first 100 kids to come by special booths will receive Kid’s Fish Grips, Primos Two-faced grunt call, Zebco Rod n Reel combos, and Lil Quacker Duck calls. There will also be free MWF T-shirts for the kids while they last.
The Outdoor Channel’s Jim Shockey has been an award-winning outdoor writer, wildlife photographer, videographer, wilderness guide and outfitter for nearly 30 years.
He owns several exclusive outfitting territories in the wild lands of Canada, including the renowned Pacific Rim Guide Territory on Vancouver Island, British Columbia and the famed 12,000-square-mile Rogue River Outfitting in the Yukon Territory. His television productions have won 15 Golden Moose Awards from 2009-2015, and he is accomplished in archery, muzzleloader and rifle.
“When I go hunting the feeling is joy,” Shockey said. “Pure joy. I know the future, no matter what it holds in the way of success and results, will absolutely hold a glorious day in the outdoors.”
Valentine, the “First Lady of Hunting” from Puryear, Tennessee, represents women in the outdoors for the National Wild Turkey Federation and co-hosts Bass Pro Shops’ outdoor TV shows on the Outdoor Channel and the Sportsman Channel. She’s been a member of Bass Pro Shops National RedHead Pro Hunting team for 17 years, a Mossy Oak ProStaff member, a pro staffer for Hunter Safety Systems and Orca coolers and a past national archery champion.
Former World Champion Turkey calling champion Preston Pittman will be on hand as well with seminars and demonstrations of his repertoire including owl hooting, gobbling and calling.
Paul Meek, legendary outdoorsman and call maker will also be on hand demonstrating calls, talking turkey and helping anybody he can. Meek will have turkey calling seminars for the kids with hands on instructions as they learn how to talk turkey with a box call.
Jason Reynolds, a nationally recognized entertainer and dog trainer will be there with his Fetch and Fish tank and his High-Flying retrievers. Jason puts on a family fun dog show that is aimed at getting the kids involved. “We just get the kids involved. All about getting kids involved in the outdoors.”
There will also be a sanctioned duck calling contest and the winners qualify to compete in the World’s Championship Contest, week of Thanksgiving during “Wings Over the Prairie Festival” in Stuttgart, Arkansas.
There will also be a 3-D bow shoot hosted by the Mississippi Bowhunters Association, which will run throughout the whole show. There will be categories and prizes for men, women, traditional, youth 12- 15, and cubs 11 and under.
