The problem of crime in Meridian is real, but crime is not the real problem, it is a symptom of a nationwide problem and that is the hopelessness of poverty.

The unemployment rate in Meridian is 30 percent higher than the national average. The poverty level in Meridian is 116 percent higher than the national average. The median household income is 45 percent lower than the national average. These measurements over poverty involve all races, religions and nationalities equally.

In order for the city of Meridian to break the stranglehold poverty has on our people, the mayor and city council together need to encourage small- and mid-size businesses to locate here by creating tax incentives while at the same time bringing jobs with these new businesses. One of the est ways to reduce poverty is through the creation of jbos. Employed people are more likely to find it easier to make the right decision. Employed people will invest their pay checks in the Meridian community.

Meridian can encourage businesses to locate here and bring their jobs crating an openly friendly environment with colorful floral displays at all exits easily visible from Interstae 20. Additonally, we need to exapand our community mental health support by recognizing the important role our parks cn provide as places for relaxation and exercise with sgtrong city support for healthy lifestyle choices. Healthy mind, healthy body, healthy Meridian and less crime.

William Compton is the Republican candidate for mayor of the City of Meridian.
