Meridian Police Officer Senior Eric Johnson surrendered to the Ridgeland Police Department after arrest warrants were issued Thursday.

Johnson, of Marion, had been captured on video at a youth baseball game in an alleged assault that left Leroi Gray, of Clinton, with a broken femur.

Mayor Percy Bland, whose son played on one of the baseball teams, appeared in the video as a bystander. Gray is seen talking to Bland at the beginning of the video before Johnson enters. Johnson appears to put Gray briefly in a headlock before Gray falls. At least four men had to pull Johnson back and restrain him.

Bland said Monday that Gray had been ejected from the game at Freedom Ridge Park, in Ridgeland, for cursing and threatening parents. Gray returned and continued this behavior before Johnson intervened.

Ridgeland Police Department Lt. Brian Myers reported that Gray went to a hospital to seek treatment for a broken femur following the alleged assault and had surgery over the weekend.

Gray told police that Johnson punched him with a closed fist and forced him to the ground.

In response, the Ridgeland Police Department issued an arrest warrant on Thursday. Myers reported that Johnson turned himself in at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose said he would wait until the Ridgeland Police Department finished their investigation before considering disciplinary action against Johnson earlier this week. Dubose said Thursday he hoped to receive a completed report at the end of Friday’s business day.

Johnson, 41, faces a simple assault charge and a $1,000 bond.
