The Ridgeland Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for Eric W. Johnson, a police officer senior with the Meridian Police Department, following a physical altercation at a youth baseball game last week.

On Friday, Johnson and Leroi Gray, assistant coaches of opposing youth baseball teams, were captured on video in a fight at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland.

Gray had been ejected from the game for cursing and threatening parents, Mayor Percy Bland, whose son played on one of the teams, said on Monday. Bland also appeared as a bystander in the video.

Gray returned to the park and, at the beginning of the video, is seen talking to Bland.

According to Ridgeland Police Department Lt. Brian Myers, Gray went to a hospital to seek treatment for a broken femur and had surgery over the weekend.

On Wednesday, Myers said they were interviewing Gray as part of the investigation. That same day, Gray alleged that Johnson assaulted him, saying Johnson punched Gray with a closed fist and forced him to the ground.

In the video, Johnson appears to put Gray into a headlock before Gray falls to the ground. At least four men had to pull Johnson away from Gray.

According to a Thursday afternoon news release from the Ridgeland Police Department, they have contacted Johnson about the outstanding warrant and said Johnson will turn himself in.

Meridian Police Chief Bennie Dubose said the Ridgeland police chief had called him Thursday morning to tell him that Gray had filed a criminal affidavit alleging simple assault.

“These charges were not filed by the Ridgeland Police Department, but by Mr. Gray,” Dubose said. “The tell-tale here is whether or not there is a conviction.”

Dubose said Ridgeland would share their final investigative report with Meridian once completed. Dubose said he hoped they would receive that report by the end of Friday’s business day.

Johnson plans to turn himself in Tuesday morning when his attorney is available, Dubose said.

Bond for Johnson was set at $1,000, according to Dubose.
