PHILADELPHIA —Aspen Wesley ended Neshoba Central’s regular season on a high note, tossing a no-hitter to lead her team over Newton County Lady 10-0 in a game called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the run-rule.
Lady Rockets coach Trae Embry credited his team’s hitting and defensive play but Wesley, a Mississippi State commit, was the main topic.
“She’s a special, special kid; she’s one of, if not the, hardest workers we have,” Embry said. “I could talk all day about her. We hit better tonight — we’ve been working hard on that area. When you put some hits together, it always helps.”
Wesley fanned the side in the first, second and sixth, finishing with 11 strikeouts while rendering no hits, stranding three Lady Cougars and overcoming three errors to collect the victory.
Wesley deflected credit to her defense.
“I worked in my spins before the game, and as far as the no-hitter goes, I didn’t know, I just pitch,” Wesley said. “My defense does a really good job behind me. Tori (Henderson) and Kaylee (Routh) made great plays.”
Wesley faced the minimum into the third when Lizzie Hollingsworth reached on an error, but Wesley struck out the next two Cougars to end the inning.
Brittany Thomas reached on an error for Newton County in the fourth, but Henderson made a diving catch on a bunt popup, and Madalyn Thompson made two nice plays to keep the no hitter alive.
Neshoba got two runs in the second inning when Rivers Gray led off with a single, Elliegh Willis was hit by a pitch and both scored on singles by Routh and Tenly Grisham.
Gray led off the fifth with a single and scored on a Willis double, and Hannah Hall scored on a two-run triple by Grisham to make it 6-0 after five innings.
Neshoba closed the door in the bottom of the sixth inning when Henderson led off with a triple and scored on a Thompson double. Gray followed with a walk and scored on a Sindle Williams single. Hall ended the game with a two- run single to make it 10-0.
Grisham had a single and a triple with two RBIs. Gray had two singles and a run scored. Willis had a single, an RBI double and scored twice. Hall scored twice for Neshoba Central.
Neshoba Central (22-2) will begin postseason play Tuesday when it will travel to Lake Cormoran for a 6 p.m. game. Newton County has a first-round bye in the Class 4A postseason.
