Two local locations of the national clothing retailer rue21 are planning to close their doors.

The Cranberry, Pennsylvania – based retailer, which sells clothing for young adults, announced the closings on Facebook, saying: “It was a difficult but necessary decision. We still have hundreds of locations across the country, and our website, rue21.com, open for business.”

No time frame was announced for the closures. The manager at the Meridian store was not available for comment Monday, and the Philadelphia store’s manager did not wish to comment on the closings.

Including the Meridian and Philadelphia locations, rue21 will shutter 13 stores in Batesville, Brookhaven, Columbia, Corinth, Flowed, Greenville, Greenwood, Hattiesburg, McComb, Oxford, and Vicksburg. Statewide, the company will leave 10 stores open in Columbus, D’Iberville, Gulfport, Laurel, Natchez, Pearl, Ridgeland, Southaven, Starkville and Tupelo.

The closures come after two other national retailers, J.C. Penney Co. and Payless ShoeSource, announced they would close stores in Meridian by the end of the year. J. C. Penney said Friday it is delaying the closure of its Meridian store until July 31, instead of mid-June. Liquidation sales will start at the stores on the closure list on May 22 instead of April 17.
