The Meridian High School girls powerlifting team continued its run of dominance by capturing an MHSAA Class III state championship Friday at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, the eighth in program history.

Along with a team crown, Meridian’s Kaselyn Stennis set a new girls all-time record in MHSAA with a 560-pound squat. Stennis competed in the 220-plus weight class, totaling 1,220 pounds. Her previous best was 1,035.

The Class III division is made up of mostly Classes 5 and 6A schools and includes more than 40 total schools.

In other area powerlifting news, Newton County’s LaPrecious Tubbs placed first in her weight class at the state meet. The Union boys won the Class 2A championship with an 18-point lead over No. 2 Bruce.
