Prep softball: West Lauderdale blows out Louisville

Mallory Thompson’s second-inning performance was a microcosm of what kind of night it was for West Lauderdale.

The Lady Knights (14-4, 7-0) remained undefeated in regional play with a 20-0 win against Louisville in a game that was called after four innings. West Lauderdale did most of its damage in an 11-run second inning that featured Thompson rounding the bases twice, once on an inside-the-park home run and another on a double and error.

“She’s stoic,” West Lauderdale head coach Jessie Kennedy said. “She has that same expression; she’s like stone. It doesn’t matter what happens. She can hit 10 home runs, and Mallory Thompson is always going to be humble, she’s always going to have that same mannerism.”

West Lauderdale jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one when Lexi Williams and Thompson both scored on errors, Hailey Talley and Kamryn Shields came home on wild pitches and Maggie Wooldridge hit an RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first.

Thompson began West Lauderdale’s scoring in the second inning when she hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in just the third at-bat of the inning. After that, Talley scored on a wild pitch, Kristen Hayes hit an RBI single and Hayes, Wooldridge and Cayley Nance all scored on errors. Lexi Smith reached first on an error, allowing another run to score, and Thompson doubled in a run and scored on an error to make it 15-0 West Lauderdale. Hayes reached on an error to send one more Lady Knight runner home before Louisville was finally able to record the third out.

After a scoreless top of the third, West Lauderdale scored four more runs in the bottom of the frame when Lily Ramsey hit an RBI single, Talley belted a two-RBI triple and Shields hit into an RBI fielder’s choice.

Smith, who started on the mound for the Lady Knights, was hit by a pitch in the second inning right before Thompson’s inside-the-park home run. Despite being in pain, she was able to finish the game, going all four innings and giving up just two hits with striking out six.

“She’s good,” Kennedy said. “She’s tough. It got her right there on that knee bone.”

Ramsey finished the game 3-for-4 for West Lauderdale, while Thompson was a perfect 3-for-3. Talley went 2-for-2 with two walks, and Hayes finished 2-for-3.

West Lauderdale will host Leake Central at 6 p.m. Thursday.
