Clarke County voters to see many uncontested races

Clarke County residents will see many uncontested races on June 6 when they elect their leaders in Quitman, Enterprise, Stonewall, Shubuta and Pachuta.

The mayors of Quitman, Enterprise and Pachuta are among the incumbents who are without opposition.

Other races pit three first-term candidates against one another with at least one newcomer running in each town’s council race. 

Quitman

Incumbent mayor Eddie Fulton is running unopposed for his third term. Four of five council members, all incumbents, are running unopposed. Bridgett Peters (Ward 2), Ronald Hollaway (Ward 3) and Harry Wheat (At large) are all running for their second term. James Buchanan (Ward 4) is running for his fourth term. Two Democrats, five-term incumbent Joe Brooks and Vakerri Cooks, are running for the Ward 1 seat.

Enterprise

Mayor Larry Murray, the incumbent, faces no opponents for his fifth term. Seven candidates are running at large for five council positions, with four incumbents. Emily Chancelor (R), Tal Gray (R) and Jason Gully (R) are each running for their first term. Darrel Phillips (R) and Mary Teresa Smith (I) are both running for their second term. Ben Moore (R) and Peggy Mosley (I) are both running for their third term.

Stonewall

Incumbent mayor Glenn Cook (D) faces opposition for his second term from Jimmy L. Smith (D) and Jerry L. Rich (R). There are five available seat for the town council and five candidates running at large for the positions. Benjie Fleming and Greg Mangum are both running for their first term, while Ferry H. Adams and Fred Frey are each running for their second term. Ricky Carpenter is running for his seventh term with the council.

Shubuta

Every candidate is running as a Democrat, with Cleveland (Baba) Peebles, Everett Heidelberg and Charles Williams each running for their first term as mayor. Six candidates are running at large for the five council seat positions, with only two incumbents. Robin Jones is running for a third term while Toria Hoze Miles is running for a second term. Wayne (Butch) Jenkins, Willie B. Nelson, Roosevelt Williams and Dane (Phone/man) Zuber are each running for a first term.  

Pachuta

Mayor Phil Fuller (I), the incumbent, is running unopposed. Six candidates are running at large as independents for the five council seats. Incumbents Glenda Ann Bennett, Keith Bogan, Terry W. Herring, Shirley Fisher Johnson and Linda M. Perry are all seeking re-election, with J. P. Richardson Jr. seeking their first council term.
