JuCo baseball: MCC sweeps Southwest Tennessee

The Meridian Community College baseball team returned to Scaggs Field on Wednesday afternoon for the first time since Feb. 19 by playing host to Southwest Tennessee Community College.

The Eagles made the most its first home games in nearly a month by sweeping a doubleheader from Southwest Tennessee by final scores of 9-7 and 7-1.
The Eagles improved to 11-5 overall with the sweep and also extended its current winning streak to five games. MCC will return to the diamond Saturday by playing its first conference games of the 2017 season with a road trip to Copiah-Lincoln. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.Saturday.
The Eagles were able to rebound from a 5-1 deficit in Game 1 on Wednesday afternoon to move past Southwest Tennessee by a final score of 9-7. MCC scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning that proved to be the difference in the two-run victory.
Sophomore JD Gann had a huge day at the plate in Game 1 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs to lead the way for the Eagles. Gann has now hit four home runs in the past four games for the Eagles. Chase Coker also had a solid Game 1 for MCC with three hits and two RBIs, while Hunter Stanley added a pair of base hits. Milton Smith also chipped in with an RBI single, and former Southeast Lauderdale star Alec Marlow had a base hit in the victory for the Eagles, and scored one run.
Sophomore Caleb Yarborough picked up the pitching win out of the bullpen in Game 1 for the Eagles by working four innings and collecting four strikeouts.
The Eagles completed the sweep in Game 2 behind timely hitting to secure the 7-1 victory. MCC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and never looked back in taking the six-run victory over Southwest Tennessee.

Milton Smith led the Eagles at the plate in Game 2 with a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Zack Carter had a pair of base hits. Former Northeast Lauderdale star Landon Keller also had an RBI double in the Game 2 victory. Former Meridian Flyer star Brandon Renfrow earned the pitching win for the Eagles by working into the fourth inning and notching a pair of strikeouts.
