A man involved in a standoff in Toomsuba last week has been charged with kidnapping following an investigation.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported shooting on the 3300 block of Lakeview Lane in Toomsuba around 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and convinced Dewayne Leslie Brantley, 26, to come into custody peacefully.

“We received a 911 call about an individual inside a residence that had shot a gun multiple times inside the residence at family members,” Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said last week.

An investigation revealed that a family argument had escalated and Brantley became angry and unreasonable, Calhoun said.

Deputies called a SWAT team to assist but convinced Brantley to come into custody before their arrival.

Calhoun said Brantley did not allow an individual to leave the home, which qualifies as kidnapping.

“Many people think of kidnapping in terms of taking someone somewhere but if a person is not free to leave then the statute is addressed the same way,” Calhoun said.

Brantley’s bond has been set at $50,000.
