The Southeast Lauderdale High School soccer team took a water logged, 4-0 victory over the McLaurin High School Tigers in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A North half playoffs.
The Tigers got good defensive play and proved coach Mike Thomas’s theory that his squad is playing it’s best soccer at the right time.
“We are kind of peaking and jelling, really playing well as a team; this was a tough match,” Thomas said. “McLaurin is a good team, but everyone contributed, and I’m very pleased with the win.”
After a weather delay caused a late start, Dakota Boney took a pass from Jacen Little and found the back of the net to put Southeast up 1-0 in the 11th minute.
JaPaul Griffin took the honors for Southeast’s next goal when he squeezed one by the McLaurin keeper. Griffin also played lock-down defense from his center back position, not letting anything get past him and limiting McLaurin’s shots on goal.
Jesus Hidalgo found the back of the goal later when he converted a penalty kick to give Southeast a 3-0 lead in the 68th minute.
Andres Alonzo ended the nights scoring when he took a perfect throw in and finished with a nice kick that went in to give the Tigers to help send them to the next round.
Southeast will travel to North Ponotoc High School Saturday to keep its playoff run alive.
