What started as an idea of getting younger band students keyed up about playing in college has drummed up success.

The dream comes to fruition with a concert on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m. in Meridian Community College’s McCain Theater. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend. This is the second year for the concert to be held.

Jon Romero, director of bands at Meridian Community College, thought of creating an honors band to get middle and high school band students to continue with their musical endeavors throughout their education.

“There are several district clinics held throughout the year for band students, such as in Jackson and Natchez, but they are so competitive and involve so many students that not all of the students who try make it, and some are even discouraged from trying due to the high numbers,” said Romero.

That note got Romero to thinking about creating an event locally. “I decided to get this started for all the band students in Lauderdale County, involving both county and city district schools,” he said.

The students will be rehearsing all day on Saturday, Jan. 7, for the Sunday, Jan. 8 concert. For more information, contact Romero at MCC at 601-484-8637.
