Murder victim identified as 25-year-old Meridian man

Meridian police identified Jeffery Pope as the man killed on New Year’s Day. 

Pope, 25, of Meridian, died sometime before 5 a.m. Sunday, becoming the first murder victim in Meridian in 2017.

Pope’s body was discovered at the intersection of 16th Street and 16th Avenue. Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said on Sunday Pope had gunshot wounds.

The state crime lab in Pearl performed the autopsy on Pope’s body. Results have not yet been released. 

Police do not have a suspect. 

“We continue to ask for and encourage help from the community,” Meridian Police Sgt. Dareall Thompson said.
