National president of VFW Auxiliary to visit Meridian

The national president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary will be visiting Meridian in January.

Colette Bishop will be in the Queen City Jan. 11-13. She is scheduled to arrive at 4 p.m. Jan. 11 at Meridian Regional Airport, where she will be greeted by members of VFW Post 12124 and others from around the state. While in Meridian, she will visit NAS Meridian and Key Field and tour some of the city’s historic areas.

Bishop, of Muscatine, Iowa, was elected national president of the VFW of the United States Auxiliary July 27 at its 103rd National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. Bishop has a long history with the organization. She was born during her mother’s and father’s terms as district president and commander. In 1974 she joined Gustaf C. Lannoo Auxiliary #1303, in Rock Island, Ill. under the eligibility of her father who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She is the third generation in her family to serve as auxiliary and district president and her life has been filled with VFW and Auxiliary involvement.

Bishop has served the organization in many different capacities including department president, auxiliary treasurer, national district council member Area B, national chief of staff and patriotic instructor. She has been director for the Patriotic Art/Voice of Democracy, Veterans & Family Support, Membership and Youth Activities programs. She was Big Ten Conference chairwoman for the Americanism program and has also has been national historian.

Bishop is semi‐retired and works as a consultant building and maintaining websites. She has worked in the information technology profession as an IT manager since 1986. Her background helped her assist the national organization with their search for a new computer system. Her hobbies include rubber stamping and decorative painting. Bishop’s family includes her husband, David; son, Jason; daughter‐in‐law, Sarah, and two grandchildren.
