Students of the Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College at Meridian Community College know: Giving back isn’t limited to the holidays.
This fall semester – from August to December 2016 – the Honors College students completed more than 690 hours of community service with the beneficiaries including Special Olympics, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Back the Badge Program, American Cancer Society, Anderson Regional Medical Center, local schools and other agencies.
Recently the group donated a bin full of coats for WTOK-TV’s Coats for Kids campaign. The coats will later be donated to Wesley House. “One of most important community service activities is Coats for Kids. As cold weather approaches, some families do not have money to buy layers for their kids or themselves; therefore coats for kids gives coats to those in need,” said an Honors College student.
In addition, voter registration was a major community service component for the Honors College for fall semester 2016. Members registered students at MCC and also at some of the local high schools.
“Community service is a requirement in the Honors College, but the students enjoy it and learn from it,” said Barbara Jones, MCC vice president for operations and an advisor to the Honors College.
