The birth of Christ is a story that has been told for thousands of years, but beginning Friday, Dec. 9, people in Meridian, Lauderdale County and the surrounding area will be able to witness an outdoor nativity experience where the true meaning of Christmas comes to life.
For the eighth year, First Assembly in Meridian will play out the story of Jesus’ birth with Bethlehem Revisited – a 25 minute hay-ride tour of the Holy Land through several historic scenes all leading up to the birth of Jesus.
“Everything is very authentic as it possibly can – from the costumes to the live animals,” said Robby Atkinson, one of the many volunteers who also plays King Herod in the second scene. “We have over 100 volunteers from the church who are working either behind the scenes or in the production.
“There are 70 people who will be in costume all three nights of the event. There will be a lot of animals that includes goats, sheep, geese, donkeys, oxen, llamas, and roman soldiers on horses.”
With more than 2,500 people attending last year, Atkinson said he has been told families are making it a yearly tradition for Christmas.
“I think it gives people an opportunity to slow down a bit, take a breath and really soak in what the true meaning of Christmas is – the birth of our Lord and Savior,” Atkinson said. “But, what makes it extra special – it is a ministry opportunity.
“The biggest reason we do it is to let everyone know it’s not all about the shopping, gifts or the music. It’s about the real reason for the season.”
The tours will continue Saturday and Sunday nights beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until 8:30. Hot cocoa will be served to those waiting to experience the Christmas story.
Although the tour has been free, the church is collecting canned food donations.
