Police continue to investigate two of the fatal shootings from the past two weeks, but say there is no relationship between them.

Police identified Iam David Simon as the man found on Russell Drive, near the Highway 39 overpass in Meridian, around 12:40 a.m. Sunday. Initial investigations revealed that Simon, not a native of Mississippi, had just left JJ’s Club on Russell Drive.

Police said they suspect robbery because of Simon’s missing wallet.

Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler reported at the time that Simon had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and had been found next to a still-running, rented Chrysler 300.

Simon’s body was sent to the state crime lab in Pearl for an autopsy.

Meridian Police Sgt. Dareall Thompson said investigators have talked with family to determine why Simon had been in Meridian. Investigators are still trying to determine who Simon was with in Meridian and if anybody left JJ’s Club with him.

A week before Simon’s death, police found the body of Jamarkee Jones in an abandoned apartment on the 1500th block of 28th Avenue on Nov. 27.

Jones body was sent to the state crime lab and police have not yet received an autopsy report.

Cobler said at the time that Jones suffered a gunshot wound to the head but that the cause of death was inconclusive because no gun was found at the scene.

“There’s nothing at this time to suggest the cases are related,” Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose said.

“It takes time on these cases,” Thompson said. “We’re doing whatever we can to get those that are responsible off of the streets.”

Police ask anyone with details about either case to call Crimestoppers at (855) 485-8477.
