Step up to care for Magnolia Cemetery
My family has links to Meridian. We have also accepted the fact that elected representatives at the national, state and city level seldom act except when an action is personally beneficial. However, we cling to the hope that the residents of Meridian and in particular business owners, members of the military (current and former) and the clergy would still behave according to a higher moral standard.
We are concerned that the community seems to be ignoring the tragedy at Magnolia Cemetery. Please take the time to drive into the cemetery (not just the property bordering the street) and view the knee-high weeds, missing markers, ant hills and eroded grave sites.
Note that there are many veterans and many generations of Meridian families buried there. See if you can find the grave of Sonny Montgomery who did so much for Meridian and the state.
Is there no respect for the deceased in Meridian?
We know the state is attempting to deal with the problem but fear we will be ready for internment before there is a state resolution. We also recognize that this is private property but surely citizens do not fear that they will face criminal charges for pulling a weed. Can we count on residents to demonstrate a little pride in their community?
