NEWTON — Community members gathered at the Newton County Funeral Home South on Saturday for the Shaver family funeral services.
Kristina Shaver, 33, and her daughters Baylee Simone, 7, and Brooke Lynn, 2, died in an accident on Monday in Chunky when a truck hit a trailer carrying the family.
Though services started at 10 a.m., a few mourners arrived as early as 9 a.m. to pay their respects.
With parking spaces quickly filling, some families parked on the grass near the funeral home sign.
Mourners gathered in small groups, remembering the family, hugging and sharing tissues.
Jennifer Turner, a former coworker of Kristina’s, drove from Georgia to attend the funeral. She had trained Kristina for nursing at Rush Foundation Hospital.
“I worked at Rush for 15 years,” Turner said. “We were good friends.”
Turner remembered one year, for Halloween, when Kristina dressed as a cardboard cloud.
“When people asked what she was, she’d say, ‘I’m partly cloudy with a chance of rain!’ and spray them,” Turner said.
Turner joined Kristina’s other coworkers entering the funeral home. Most of them wore black dresses with red lipstick, honoring Kristina.
“Red lipstick was her thing,” Turner said.
Monday’s crash injured Kristina’s daughter, McKenzie, 8. The University of Mississippi Medical Center is treating McKenzie and reported Saturday she is in good condition.
Also injured in the crash was Kristina’s sister, Melissa Cook, and three of her children. Melissa and her three-year-old son, Brycen, have been released from UMMC. Melissa’s daughters Kaitlyn, 9, and Chloe, 7, are both in good condition, UMMC officials said Saturday.
