ECCC men, women open season with wins

CLARKSDALE — A pair of free throws by freshman point guard Jaylon Chiles with eight seconds to play gave the East Central Community College Warriors a 64-62 win over Coahoma Community College in the season opener Thursday.

Chiles, a product of Biloxi High School, scored 11 points and dished out four assists in just 13 minutes of play.

East Central led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Tigers closed the gap to 32-27 at intermission.

Freshman forward Antonio Clark out of Leake Central High School also had 11 points for the Warriors in just five minutes of play. Another freshman, guard Jaquan Dotson from Neshoba Central High School, led East Central in rebounds with seven. He also scored nine points.

The Warriors outrebounded Coahoma 51-39. East Central played 11 freshmen in the contest.

East Central rose to 1-0 on the year.

ECCC WOMEN 80, COAHOMA 75

The defending state champion East Central Community College Lady Warriors went on the road Thursday and came home with a season-opening win over the Coahoma Lady Tigers.

With 10 new players on the roster, East Central fell behind after one quarter of play, 21-18. However, a strong second quarter gave the Lady Warriors the 44-39 halftime lead.

Coahoma cut the lead to three with less than a minute to play before East Central pulled out the five-point win.

Freshman center Curtisha Coleman out of Wayne County High School led East Central in scoring with 20 points. Sophomore guard Bryona Stewart, a product of Itawamba AHS in Fulton, added 19, while Stewart’s former high school teammate and fellow sophomore guard Aniyah Marshall chipped in 12 points for the Lady Warriors. Laneisha Jeans from Pine Forest High School (Pensacola, Fla.) had 11 points. Newcomer sophomore forward Jessica Powers out of Pearl River Central High School led in rebounds with seven and was a perfect 6 for 6 at the free throw line.

East Central (1-0) will host Shelton State Community College out of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Monday.
